Super TV for 70 pct. of the country

December 14, 2006-TDC initiates its most ambitious commitment to television via broadband to date. More than 1.8 million households will get access to a new generation of TDC TV which then becomes the largest cable-based television network in the country.

"We think that in future competition in the broadband market will be about offering the best content services, and television and movies will play a key role. This is TDC's alternative to television of the future," says Gert Rieder, director of TDC Residential.

The new interactive television network airs in February, and will cover some 61 pct. of all households. Coverage will be expanded during 2007, and by year-end approx. 70 pct. of all households may access the network.

It is a technology jump compared to the current broadband television as well as to traditional cable or satellite television. Some of the new features are integrated program guide, harddisk recorder, pause function and rental and watching of movies facilities, whenever you wish. The network is also HDTV ready.

"We are in the middle of a comprehensive development project transferring the traditional telephone network to a multimedia network including all from telephony to HDTV and movies. The new version of TDC TV is the first specific result of this work," says Gert Rieder.

FastTV and Teracom create TV history with an IPTV agreement for almost one million households

Dec 11th 2006- Swedish TV history will be written today. FastTV has signed an IPTV (also known as broadband TV) operator's agreement with Teracom, which for the first time ever will be

opening up its broadband network to digital TV. Almost one million households will be given the chance to choose IPTV from FastTV in 2007 in what is a major breakthrough for the Swedish TV distribution market.

Back in the spring of 2006, a number of households in Värmland tried out IPTV from FastTV, using Teracom's broadband network. The test was so successful that the parties decided to implement a commercial launch. The agreement has now been signed, and FastTV will become the first operator to delivery IPTV using Teracom's broadband network. "We anticipate being able to offer IPTV to households in the areas where we have built broadband networks very shortly now, which means about 500,000 households, mainly in
Värmland, Dalarna, Jämtland and Sörmland, with the first sales in Dalarna," says Ulf Gustafsson, Sales Director at Teracom.

FastTV's infrastructure customer base totals 200,000 households to date, and with Teracom's 500,000, the company's customer base will expand immediately to almost 700,000 households. And the expansion of Teracom's network in 2007 will make FastTV's IPTV service available to almost one million households.

The partnership between FastTV and Teracom is a breakthrough for the Swedish TV distribution market. Other distribution networks are usually linked to a specific telecoms operator.

Teracom, by contrast, is unique because it has built up competitively neutral broadband networks with several service providers. This not only gives households increased freedom to choose their preferred range of products and services, it also gives FastTV the opportunity to offer something unique in the field of IPTV. "I believe mobility and interactivity will become increasingly important in the future.

Consumers are going to want access to their TV services on their PCs and mobile phones as well. Quite simply, it should be

possible to watch TV wherever, whenever and on any platform you like. Tomorrow's TV will mean bringing a completely new approach to freedom of choice on the customer's terms. The agreement with Teracom is a big step towards this realising this scenario," says Stephan Guiance, President of FastTV.

"For Teracom, IPTV is an important complement to our traditional distribution of radio and TV via the land-based network. We believe that tomorrow's TV viewing will mean a shift from fixed to mobile, from a fixed time to my time, and from TV listings to my listings, and this is absolutely in line with our position as Sweden's first media operator," says Ulf Gustafsson.

IPTV Takes Belgium by Storm

December 6, 2006 - Belgacom, Belgium's biggest telco operator, has topped the 100,000 mark for its interactive, digital IPTV offering faster than expected. Instead of the end of the year, as originally anticipated, the Belgian operator reached exactly 102,971 subscribers for its IPTV offering back at the end of September 2006.

The solution is based on Surpass Home Entertainment from Siemens, a turnkey end-to-end solution for IPTV that is brought into Belgian households via the ADSL telephone line.

Discussing its financial results for the third quarter, the Belgian fixed-network and mobile operator Belgacom drew attention to the particular success of its IPTV services - i.e. television via IP-based broadband lines. As early as the end of September 2006, Belgacom TV had already registered 102,971 customers. The net ARPU (average revenue per user) stood at 11.6 euros for the first nine months of 2006. This figure showed a rise in the third quarter which can obviously be traced to the introduction of additional services such as "Rewatching TV" and special offerings sorted by topic.

In mid-2004, Belgacom chose Siemens as its partner for developing its interactive digital TV offering. The Belgacom TV offering includes all the major TV broadcasters. A pay-per-view offering is also available, as well as a digital videotheque with around 300 movies for video on demand. Subscriptions for watching soccer have already proved to be especially popular, with Belgacom's exclusive broadcasting rights allowing fans to follow the matches in the Belgian league live.

Belgacom is another telco proving that IPTV is the answer for operators wanting to deploy television services. European telcos such as Fastweb, Telefonica and France Telecom have successfully deployed IPTV to their customers and all possess over 100,000 subscribers. BT is the next in line to deploy its IPTV service and only time will tell if the UK market is ready to receive IPTV as successfully as Belgium and indeed many other European countries have.

Philips introduces MediaHedge, a content clearing service for content owners and content users

Los Angeles, California - Philips Content Identification, a line of business in Philips Electronics, announces MediaHedge: a content rights clearing service for content owners and content users. This Philips service helps both the entertainment industry and the end-user to optimally sell, share and distribute content with respect for copyrights in an easy, controlled and automated way.

MediaHedge is an automated rights clearance system, which can replace the current process in which web hosts remove copyrighted material from their websites manually after being requested to do so by the rights owner. Once MediaHedge has identified the upload of copyrighted material, the web host can then allow, restrict or prohibit the use of the newly uploaded content on its video sharing

website or peer-to-peer network, depending on the content owner's wishes. MediaHedge is consumer friendly and does not restrict the use of content in their own domain nor does it limit the use of increasingly popular video sharing websites.

The MediaHedge content clearing service fully utilizes Philips' state-of -the-art Video Fingerprinting and Database Matching technology, which has already been successfully introduced to the market. A video fingerprint, extracted from the content during upload, is matched to the official fingerprint database provided by the content owners. In this way, clear rules for the use of copyrighted content are obtained directly from the content owners, since they maintain full ownership and control over the fingerprint database.
Philips Fingerprinting technology is capable of identifying existing video material that is currently in circulation, unlike watermarking that requires information to be embedded into the video content prior to release. The robust fingerprint matching system is capable of identifying video even when it is severely degraded and can recognize very short video clips from anywhere within the original video material, irrespective of any audio manipulations.

" Controlling the legitimate use of copyrighted seemed an almost impossible task when hundreds of thousands of files are being uploaded to popular video-share websites every day," says Ronald Maandonks, General Manager of Philips Content Identification.

"Fortunately, there is now a solution in the shape of Philips MediaHedge that works right across the industry, helping content owners to protect their valuable assets, and helping content users and consumers to enjoy video sharing features without risking legal action because of copyright infringement."

Philips Content Identification manages access to the system for all parties and provides a full installation and maintenance service of the MediaHedge system for content owners and web hosting companies alike. The MediaHedge system is available now from Philips Content Identification.
