| 1946. By 1949, receiver sales were exceeding 10,000 per month. By 2000, over 98% of all American households had at least one TV and more than 70% of American households owning two or more television sets. Cable television service started in the United States during the 1960s.
Figure 1 shows that the worldwide cable television market has steadily grown to over 355 million customers by 2007. This diagram shows the growth rate of new cable television subscribers has been 2% to 3% each year. Cable Modem Market Cable modem service market was 71 million households in 2007. Cable modem services revenues increased from $22 billion in 2005 to $26 billion in 2006. The broadband cable services market has aggressive competition from DSL (outside the USA) and competition is likely to increase with wireless broadband (e.g. WiMax) and high speed mobile communication (e.g. 3G cellular). Figure 2 shows that the worldwide cable modem market has steadily grown to over 71 million customers by 2007.
