This table shows sample rates for a few of the hundreds of ITSPs as of August, 2002.

The usage costs to connect Internet Telephones to standard telephones within the United States (long distance) ranges from approximately 1.7 cents to 3 cents per minute. International calls start at a little over 3 cents per minute.

There are usually no setup, no monthly service fee, and no monthly minimums for ITSP services.  ITSP interconnection costs are decreasing.

The reason why these calls are so low cost is because most of the call is routed through the Internet. You already pay for the Internet via your Internet service provider. The only additional cost, if any, for Internet telephone service is the connection fee from the Internet to the public telephone system.
